I’m sure most familiar with the song Mad World, as it was the haunting theme for the movie Donnie Darko sung by the amazing Mike Andrews, but did you know there was a video as well? This little gem was directed by Michel Gondry of all people, and features a rooftop perspective of a bunch of kids making shapes on the ground below. As is the usual for Michel, the idea is extremely simple and lo-fi but is totally effective and beautiful when you see it. I think my favorite part is the boat on the water, when you squint your eyes it looks so rad.

Come on, I know all you Porsche Unleashed Fans out there know what I’m talking about. The 6th? in the line of the Need for Speed series, this game was my best ever. Ultra realistic handling, ultra realistic damage, and the best scenic race courses in any NFS game before or after!!! Heck the game was so realistic, you could reach a stage where you could not go any further, cuz your car was too damaged, and you didnt have money to replace it!

The 944 was one of my favourties, cuz she was extremely stable, and could cut corners like a hot knife through butter! And to see that babe in NYC the other night, was truely nostalgic!

The Dhaba College days. So its late in the afternoon, and my buddies and me are thirsty for some beer, and hungry for some Butter Chicken. There’s no better place to head out, especially at the end of the month when the money is tight, than your nearest Highway Dhaba. These started out as pit stops for hungry, cross country Lorry (Indian versions of Trucks) drivers, and now serve millions of hungry, and bored, college students across the country! Cheap food, Alcohol available and ample place to park your truck and have a siesta. For those of you who don’t know what that’s like, let me tell you a typical Dhaba experience:

Drive up say about 5-10 miles from college, and you hit a typical dhaba on the Mysore-Bangalore Highway. About 7-10 thatched roof huts, with Bamboo waist high walls and matted coconut leaves as a roof. Our personal favorite was Pallavi Dhaba, located about 2-4 KM from Tippu Sultan’s island fortress of Srirangapatnam. So we park our car right upto our hut of choice (why right upto it, you’ll soon find out:-D), and wait out for the rest of the gang, who usually arrive on more Bikes and Cars. Once we know the number of people, we call out to the boy who’s in charge of serving us, and ask him for extra chairs to seat all of us. Inside the huts, we usually have either plastic tables, or in the more established one, we would have a have a crude granite table. Chairs would always be the cheap plastic ones, which make it easy to add more too. Once we’re all in, in comes our server boy, asking us what our orders would be. around the tables the orders goes : 3 bottles of beer, 1 quarter bottle of Vodka, 1 quarter bottle of Signature whiskey, 3 cokes, 2 sprites and of course, two Raja specials! Raja special’s are classic drinking buddies, and are made of peanuts fried with tomatoes, onions, and secret Indian spices:-D. Now, these Dhaba’s usually have no license to serve alcohol, so they never stock alcohol!!!!!

Alcohol Licenses cost an arm in India, and these shanty places usually cant afford them. So where’s it coming from? Well, our man will run out, and within a matter of 2 minutes, get us 3 plates of salted cucumber, tomatoes and onions, ON THE HOUSE. This is usually to buy time and placate us, while in the Dhaba’s kitchen, sourcing strategies for our alcohol is being formulated!

While we enjoy our free cucumber salad, our man’s already ordered his 2nd in command to take the long list of booze we’ve ordered, and sent him on his little bicycle to fetch from the nearest booze shop! Imagine a little guy, pedaling away at breakneck speed, his job on the line if he’s late! Within about 10 minutes he’s back, and another minute later, in comes our waiter, with all what we’ve ordered, skillfully balanced on a huge platter!

Music? Well, no problemo! You name the song, and we can play it at the Dhaba! Remember that car we parked right outside the hut? Well, pop open the doors, pump up the volume, and there you have Roger Water’s Comfortably Numb blasting from a Pioneer system! Well, other than that, a few rats crawling along the roof, and the occasional Cop’s walking in, there’s nothing much to “The Dhaba”!

Damn, I miss those college days.
